Protection of electric substations and power transmission lines against summer lightning overvoltage and fires is one of the key targets of the power engineers of JSC MOESK branch – “South Electric Grids”.
The experts of “South Electric Grids” have developed and fulfilled a comprehensive set of actions aimed at securing power supply and power grid facilities functioning during the summer season of 2011. Particularly, all the electrical equipment, which may be subject to damage caused by lightning strikes, was checked up.
Facility fire safety commissions jointly with the divisional managers inspected the territories, buildings and constructions, 35-110 kV substations for their safe operation. Emergency stock of basic equipment, materials and devices, required for emergency recovery operations performance, was checked.
The enterprise’s specialists inspected the stick-pedestal insulators condition at substations and in 35-110 kV distributors, checked the operational readiness of the power transmission line fault locator, automatics and overload protection devices. Special attention is given to enhancement of the substation equipment reliability, safety and technical condition. The technical status and readiness of automatic fire-fighting and fire alarm system were tested as well .
The current year plan contemplates the replacement of a ground wire with length of 16,7 km for 35-220 kV power transmission lines. Within the repair program implementation, since the start of the year, 1598 insulators on 35-110 kV overhead lines, 2568 insulators on 6-10 kV overhead lines and 234 supports on 6-10 kV overhead lines have been replaced. The process of clearing and extension of power transmission line right-of-ways has been made one of the priorities among the arrangements aimed at successful fire hazardous season undergoing in 2011.

Prior to the summer, extraordinary qualification anti-accident and fire-fighting training and briefings with operating, repair and dispatching personnel have been held. The arrangement were aimed at proper actions honing under the conditions of thunderstorms and fire events.
Acting Chief Engineer of “South Electric Grids” Mikhail Ezhokin noticed that “first of all, the consumers suffer from outages caused by thunderstorms. Therefore, the results of the thunderous season 2010 undergoing have been carefully analyzed and taken into account in the action plan approved in the branch “South Electric Grids”, which, finally, will allow the power facilities to operate in more reliable and steady mode this year”.
