JSC “Moscow United Electric Grid Company” (a company of the Rosseti Group) is carrying out a large-scale renovation of 220/110 kV “Presnya” of Central Electric Grids, a branch of the company. Recently the company has completed the works on transferring 220 kV “Matveevskaya - Presnya 1” overhead cable line and 250 MVA autotransformer (AT-1) in a new 220 kV gas-insulated switchgear and control gear.

The large-scale modernization of the facility is carried out by the company within the framework of the investment program. The main goal of the renovation is to improve significantly the reliability of electrical energy supply to consumers, increase capacity and transmission capacity and open up the possibility to use a new 20 kV voltage category to connect consumers.

Renovation of the facility commenced in 2007 and its completion is scheduled for 2020. Total estimated cost of the project will amount to RUR 4 billion.

Construction of a building for 110-220 kV gas-insulated switchgear and control gear was completed. Modern gas-insulated equipment with increased reliability and smaller dimensions was installed. The autotransformer and lines protection was replaced and the automatic process control system was installed and adjusted. This system allows the operator on duty to operate 110 kV and 220 kV electrical equipment using a computer, which significantly decreases the response time and increases workplace safety.

A new building for transformers and indoor 20 kV switchgear and control gear will be constructed later on at the cleared premises of 110 kV outdoor switchgear to ensure reliable power supply to Big City and the new adjacent metro stations.

Currently the works on reconnecting 220 kV overhead cable lines of “Matveevskaya - Presnya 2” and AT-2 are in progress.

“Presnya” substation was put into operation in 1980. Before the renovation there were installed two autotransformers with the capacity of 200 MVA each that were later replaced with the autotransformers with the capacity of 250 MVA each.

The substation ensures delivery of the power of new TPP-12 generating devices to the uniform electric energy system of the Moscow Region. Thus, stable functioning of 110 kV grid in this energy hub is guaranteed. The major consumers of “Presnya” substation include: Flour milling plant No. 4, JSC “Tryokhgornaya manufaktura”, Moscow Zoo, OJSC World Trade Center, CJSC Expocentre, Moscow City and other facilities located in the heart of the capital.

“Renovation of “Presnya” substation will significantly improve reliability of electrical energy supply to consumers of the entire Moscow Region,” remarked Pavel Samylov, Deputy Director and Chief Engineer of Central Electrical Grids. “But what is particularly important, after renovation “Presnya” substation will be open for technological connection of new consumers.”
