JSC “MOESK” holds actions aimed to get prepared for the increased storm activity period. The primary goals of the electric grid branches during this time is to ensure uninterrupted supply of electricity to consumers, improve reliability of equipment lightning protection and reduce damage as a result of storm overvoltage.
The additional trainings are held for the electric grids emergency personnel during preparation for the storm season, which are aimed at localization of damages at overhead lines, search for, and elimination of single-phase short circuits to the ground at the feeding centers.
All branches of Moscow United Electric Grid Company revise the projects of arrangement of lightning-related overvoltage protection tools for 2011. This is done subject to the results of the last storm season.
Substations, transitional centers and power lines are surveyed. When holding surveys, special attention is paid to the condition of isolation in the areas with the polluted atmosphere, dimensions from wires of overhead lines to crossed facilities, structures and young growth. Correctness of arrangement and condition of lightning protection devices are checked: lightning rods and lightning conductors, overvoltage arresters and terminators.
Power specialists annually hold large-scale work of replacement and installation of overvoltage protection tools, and carry out diagnostics of electric equipment in order to increase reliability of electric power supply during the storm season. In particular, diagnostics of grounding devices subject to the requirements of electromagnetic compatibility held at the substations senior than 25 years old, and after repairs and reconstruction, allows to prevent damages of electric equipment as a result of short circuits, reduces the number of failures of relay protection equipment.
Diagnostics of grounding devices subject to the requirements of electromagnetic compatibility is held in JSC “MOESK” since 2005. When it is held, the grounding device of an energy facility is exposed to testing influences, which simulate short circuits and strokes of lightning upon lightning rods. This allows to determine the parameters of contour of grounding and prepare the project of reconstruction for their bringing to the normative values.
It is planned to troubleshoot the grounding devices at 22 substations of JSC “MOESK” in 2011; More than RUR 4.5 million were assigned for this purpose.
Power specialists will continue works of replacement of porcelain linear insulation at 35-110-220 kV overhead lines (OL). It is planned to install 20 thousand pieces of glass linear insulators and to replace about 120 km of lightning protection cable.
At the substations of 35 kV and above, the porcelain insulators are replaced by polymeric support -rod insulators with glass plastic core, which possesses water repellency, are steady against temperature drops of the environment and raised humidity. In 2011, the branches of JSC “MOESK” plan to install 2.5 thousand polymeric insulators for the amount exceeding RUR 30 million.
JSC “MOESK” also implements modern overvoltage protection means (explosion-proof terminators of overvoltage, including suspension-type ones, long-spark arresters in the grids with isolated wire, etc.).
“One of the problems of electric grids is significant deterioration of high-voltage equipment, ageing of its isolation,” Alexander Barsukov, chief of the service for isolation, overvoltage protection and high-voltage equipment testing of JSC “MOESK” notes. “Therefore, installation of modern lightning protection devices and performance of diagnostics are aimed, first of all, at prolongation of service life of capital equipment. These measures provide protection of weak isolation from atmospheric overvoltage.”
