Branch of JSC “MOESK” - Central Electric Grids implemented the program of measures to prepare for the storm season. In order to reduce the vulnerability of electrical installations, to avoid technical failures and damages of power equipment during a thunderstorm, a number of measures were held by experts of Central Electric Grids.

Power engineers conducted a survey of substations, buildings and power transmission lines. As part of preparations technical condition of insulators, ground wires, lightning arresters, power transmission line supports, valve-type lightning arresters and Excess-voltage suppressors, grounding devices for electrical equipment of constructions and buildings is checked.

Besides, additional instructions and trainings for operational staff were performed, during which the skills of locating the faults in overhead lines by the fixing devices were being perfected. Means of anti-lightning protection, provided by projects, were put into service. Mandatory condition for adding of new objects is supposed to be the presence of surge voltage protection. Records of all storm outages of equipment and damage to the insulation are organized.

According to Deputy Head of Service on isolation and surge voltage protection of Central Electric Grids Sergey Talakin, "These measures will ensure stable operation of the grids during the period of thunderstorm season, which in 2011 covers the time period from the 1st of May to 30th of October.”

A set of activities conducted at the substations of the capital will improve the reliability of power supply to consumers in Moscow.
